What now appears to be self-evident had to be first invented or created. This applies to book printing too. In Germany in 1450, Johannes Gutenberg made a major breakthrough. He invented movable lead letters which could be used to print documents and books in large numbers. This was a pioneering invention that soon conquered the whole world.

Without Gutenberg we would not have newspapers, magazines or books today. Of course the procedures have continued to evolve over time. In recent decades in particular, the graphics industry has become more and more electronic. The use of computers has increased greatly, and e-mail and Internet now prevail. In short: The graphics industry has experienced exciting times from its beginnings – from Gutenberg to the Internet.

Hundreds of trainee polygraphic artists from six counties took part in a design competition organized by the Swiss Association for Visual Communication (Viscom). An international judging panel chose the best work together with Swiss Post. The winning design was created by Meike Kollmann from Germany. It shows a lead character with the letter "a" but the symbol on paper is "@". @ is representative nowadays of the entire spectrum of the World Wide Web.

Switzerland and Luxembourg are issuing a stamp to mark this 550-year journey through time. The Swiss special stamp entitled "From Gutenberg to the Internet" has a face value of one franc. It will be available from 8 May 2009
